He primarily deals with surgery of cancer and endocrine glands (thyroid, parathyroid and adrenals). He has more than 5000 surgical procedures  during last 5 years under his log which include thyroidectomies, radical neck dissections, pancreatectomies, esophagectomies and many more.

Prof Waseem is a leading general surgeon and researcher who has extensively worked on discovering important roles of ghrelin in gastrointestinal tract. His work has provided significant insights into ghrelin-linked intestinal cell proliferation, apoptosis and physiological function during inflammation. Moreover, he has discovered role of ghrelin in gastrointestinal and pancreatic malignancy.

Prof Waseem continues to work on ghrelin and many other important surgical problems. Under his leadership, Department has designed many important instruments and have answered critical scientific questions in surgery.  He along with his team in Shalamar Surgical Research Initiative has developed many tools like PreODIT to measure the difficulty in thyroidectomy, Shalamar Online Learning Experience Measure (SOLEM), SOREEM, Curriculum Compass etc. Apart from ghrelin his research has mainly focused on thyroid/ parathyroid surgery, surgical education, artificial intelligence, pancreatic malignancy and gastrointestinal physiology.
